Our Story
1990
History of Berkot's Super Foods
John Kotara in Mokena, Illinois, Berkot’s Super Foods began as a single-location grocery store. Kotara, who had previously worked as a manager for A&P, saw an opportunity to bring a fresh, customer-focused shopping experience to the local community.
The company steadily grew, expanding its footprint across Illinois and Indiana through the acquisition of existing stores from major operators such as Fleming and SuperValu. With each new location, Berkot’s built a reputation for offering high-quality, fresh meats, produce, and deli items, which became a hallmark of their stores.
Berkot’s focuses on perishables, particularly USDA grade meats and fresh produce, while also remaining price competitive. Its community involvement is a key aspect of the brand, with frequent participation in local events and charitable initiatives.
By combining superior service, fresh products, and community engagement, Berkot’s has grown into a trusted neighborhood grocery chain, now part of Central Grocers, a cooperative that serves over 200 independent grocery retailers in the Chicagoland area and Northwest Indiana
